Lynn “Buck” Charlson is recognized as the inventor of the Char-Lynn Orbit Motor, first patented in the early ‘60’s. The business grew rapidly from the mid-60’s and employed Bob Doyle as its engineer/lawyer and export manager and me in regional marketing. Bob Doyle worked on the license to Danfoss, while I worked on organizing distribution in North America.
Doyle assisted in the sale of Char-Lynn to Eaton, then joined Eaton and established Orbit Motor manufacturing in Japan. I went on to join Fauver Company.
These days Doyle is semi-retired in China, and I am semi-retired in Florida. Meanwhile, orbit motors have become a commodity, with several factories making the motors in China, including an Eaton factory and independent factories.
Before Chinese manufacturers directly attack international markets, shutting out US marketing jobs, Doyle and I have decided to participate in protecting and creating jobs in the US by controlling foreign manufacturers and assisting US marketeers. In this way, motor users in international markets can get the best quality at reasonable savings, and hydraulic application expertise and corresponding jobs are kept and created in the US.
